RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery): Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is a method of performing surgery inside the kidney using a viewing tube called a fiberoptic endoscope. For RIRS, the endoscope is inserted through the urethra (urethral opening) into the bladder and then through the ureter into the urine-collecting portion of the kidney. Therefore, the endoscope travels retrograde (up the urinary system) into the kidney (endorenal). RIRS can be run to remove the stone. Stones can be seen through a scope, manipulated or crushed with an ultrasound probe, vaporized with a laser probe, or grasped with small forceps.
